books

Türk Mûsıkîsi Nazariyatı ve Usûlleri

(İsmail Hakkı Özkan)

The standard reference on Turkish makam theory, easily available from Tulumba or Pan Kitabevi.

Türk Mûsıkîsi'nde Kompozisyon ve Beste Biçimleri

(Prof. Dr. Alâeddin Yavaşça)

Contains examples of every vocal form. Includes notation for essential works like Itri's Neva Kâr. Also available from Pan Kitabevi.

Karagöz Musikisi

(Etem Ruhi Üngör)

Probably out of print but you may be able to find a copy through Pan. It is published by the Kültür Bakanlığık Yayınları #1059 and contains a couple hundred classical songs & köçekçeler which are referenced in Cevdet Kudret's excellent 3-volume compilation of Ottoman Karagöz manuscripts.

Tanburî Cemil'in Hayâtı

(Mes'ud Cemil)

The biography of our favorite tanbur & kemence player written by his son (in Turkish). One of my projects is to attempt to translate sections of this to make it accessible to non-Turkophone Cemil fans.

schools

Ross Daly's Labyrinth Music Workshop in Houdetsi, Crete (Greece) is a wonderful experience. The students are serious about the music and the teachers are masters from around the Balkans & Middle East.

websites

neyzen.com and turkmusikisi.com are the best resources on the web for notation.

Dimitris Rapakousios makes beautiful instruments.

Mavrothis Kontanis and Adam Good play the ud beautifully.

Peter Biffin, inventor of the tarhu, is a genius.

Ben Hume has an unparalleled understanding of woods and what makes instruments resonate. He's repairing a couple of my kemences right now.
